Hi Hannah, Get an ABN first- it is free and easy! Then decide on a name then a logo...so much to think about! I can't wait to hear of your adventures and see your business grow-you will love it-working for yourself is truly awesome! Erin
Hi Erin - thanks so much for writing back! Quick question - but if I am just to sell these items to friends in the meantime - do I still need a ABN?? I am digging dip trying to find the confidence to do it all. I have put a feeler out to all my friends on my facebook page and seeing if my products will sell. What do you do for your business??
Hello Again :) I am pretty certain that you don't need an ABN to start selling-unless you are going to earn the big bucks. You don't need to register for GST either (only after earning a certain amount). A quick call (haha-it is not always quick!) to the ATO will be able to smooth out any queries. I have a floral & event design business - Vera & Rose (www.veraandrose.com). I have an ABN from way back (I used to make childrens clothing as well:) I don't charge GST because at the moment I don't earn enough. I have been fortunate enough to pick up a few corporate clients including Toowoomba City Council for which I use my ABN.
I would register your business name though (so no-one else can pinch it). And get a logo for your beautiful items! I am looking at having a shopping cart on my site also=there are so many options! I have designed a line of headbands that have just been photographed-they will be ready next week hopefully!
I know what you mean about the confidence part too-it is quite daunting! I have taken on the approach of 'fake it till you make it' and it seems to be working! You have a real skill in your craft! A market stall is also a great way to get exposure. I am in the planning process of having a 'pop up florist' at the Queens Park markets-just finalising the designs.
Well! I am sure that is enough info for you to process for now :) Oh and Facebook is a great way to start-that is how I got my first two weddings!
Let me know what you decide! Erin (erin@veraandrose.com)
